FHSWIN - Installation (Continued)

Some Terminology (continued)
With the development of Personal Computer systems, new terminology came along. It was based upon common conceptions of information coming on pages of paper, stuffed in folders, piled on desktops, stored in drawers of file cabinets. Former "datasets" became "Files", and "Directories" became "Folders"

The idea of program "Libraries" seems to have been dropped today, though the Family History System program (FHSWIN.exe or FHSW2018.exe) is actually a "library" of many separate programs linked together into that one program "file". You will sometime find me speaking of a process (e.g. GEDCOM, MailMerge, Report Printing, etc) as being done by a particular program when it is actually a "sub-program" of the one main FHSWIN program file.

All of this has been said to try and justify my tendency to lapse into old "mainframe" terminology when describing the "Family History System". I speak of the entire collection of information that you enter about your family as a "Family File", though it consists of three different collections of information (Name, Address and Miscellaneous) that I call "datasets", but today would each be considered a "file".

We will next look at the "Program Folder" that was created during the Installation process.
