FHSW32 - Family History System for Windows after WIN95
FHSW32PK.zip - (07/07/18) - (2068 KB) - This ZIP file contains an "FHSWIN_Install_Files" folder containing files for installing a 32-bit version of FHSWIN. To install the program, move that folder out of the Zip file and (double)click on the "setup.exe" file in the folder. The software will be installed in an FHSW2018 sub-folder of the "Program Files" folder on your C drive. (Also see the NOTEs below)FHSW2018.zip - (09/23/24) - (429 KB) - This ZIP file contains the latest version of the FHSWIN executable program file (FHSW2018.exe) and FHS support files that have been modified or added since the full FHSW32PK zip file was last prepared. If you have previously installed the FHSW32PK package, you can update FHSWIN by copying the files in this zip file to the folder from which you are executing FHSW2018.
FHSWIN-Help.zip - (09/23/24) - (9177 KB) - This ZIP file contains the folder that provides information for the "About/Help" Main Menu option. The "FHSWIN-Help" folder should be placed in the folder from which you are executing FHSW2018.
(Note: the FHSWIN-Help folder is not a part of the FHSW32PK.ZIP or FHSW2018.ZIP files.) FHS-SYS.zip - (09/28/24) - (10,062 KB)
NOTE: While running the SETUP program in the "FHSWIN_Install_Files" folder, you may get a message saying that there is insufficient space on the C drive and indicating a negative value for the available space on that drive. Click on the "Install Now" button that is part of that message to continue the installation. This appears to be a problem with the SETUP program provided with Visual Basic 4.0 that I haven't been able to resolve.NOTE: FHSW32 requires the "MS LineDraw(TrueType)" font to correctly display text in the program's screen displays. If you do not have that font on your computer (as evidenced by strange characters showing up on the program's Main Menu display, it can be installed with the Control Panel FONTS application using the LINEDRAW.TTF file found in the FHSW2018 folder where the software was installed in the "Program Files" folder on your C drive.
Although this version of FHSWIN removes the restriction for file names to 8.3 format in 16-bit Windows environments, the directories/folders containing FHS family files are still limited to 25 character "path" names. This is a restriction of the format for the FHS Family Definition File (FDF file) in which family file setups are stored. You may consider putting a copy of the FHSW2018 folder in another location, even renaming it if you choose, and run the program from the FHSW2018.exe file in the alternate folder, but you should keep the original FHSW2018 folder in "Program Files" to allow for uninstalling (and reinstalling) the software if that is required at a later time.
For convenience in running FHSW2018, consider creating a "shortcut" to the FHSW2018.exe program on your desktop. This can be done by: placing your mouse cursor on the Windows desktop and pressing the right mouse button and selecting "New" and "Shortcut" from the dropdown lists of options. Then follow the instructions for creating the shortcut. During installation, the FHSW1028.exe program file is placed in an FHSW2018 sub-folder of the "Program Files (x86)" folder on the C: drive of your computer.
The installation folder "FHSWIN_Install_Files" also includes system support files specifically required by 32-bit Visual Basic applications but MAY have omited some support files that are normally distributed with some versions of Windows. If you receive a message indicating a missing file when attempting to run FHSWIN after installing it from this package, please let me know by sending an email to pbrown@bitbrothers.com.
